This article claims that Summernats is not a motorsport event because it features burnouts. What about the drag-racing, go-to-whoa, grass-khana, and dyno competition (motors competing against each other literally!)

While Summernats is not my cup of tea I think the author of that article is being a bit of a dick, but he's doing it on purpose so I guess he won't mind if I say that. That being said I agree with him I don't think Summernats is a motorsport, to me it's more like judging at a car show or that silly competition the stance guys had about driving up and down a driveway without bottoming out.
To summarize: not motorsport, nothing wrong with it, not for me.

How do you define "sport" ?
Sport (or sports ) is all forms of usually competitive physical activity which, [1] through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing entertainment to participants, and in some cases, spectators.
The above is from Wikipedia, and I can agree with that definition. And if I go by that definition, a burnout event isn't sport. Anyone can floor one or two pedals. Drag racing however, is sport because it takes both mental and physical skill. I have no idea what go-to-whoa is, so I can't apply the definition of sport to it. Grass-khana, if it is a bit like Block's Gymkahna, can be regarded as sport.
And, sorry, but a dyno competition isn't sport. It might be fun to watch, for the sights and sounds (and feels, probably), but there is skill in preparation, not in execution.

I'd word it as : Summernats is a festival that contains motor sports.
Holy flying fuck that article is flame bait. What paper is it from?
